OUR STORY

Our Story

In 2017, Ike and Sharon Miller received a vision to launch a new church in South Durham. Because RDU is one of the most highly educated areas in the country, they recognized the need for a church that was both thoughtful about faith and passionate about Jesus. This church would need to take seriously the big, intellectual questions of faith, while also nurturing people’s relationship with God. And, this church would need to embody the whole message of Jesus, which not only heals our relationship with God, but our relationship with others, and even with ourselves.

And so, with this vision in mind, Ike and Sharon launched Bright City Church in 2018, in the Southpoint AMC Theater.

The name, “Bright City,” holds two meanings, both of which come from the Bible: it refers to Jesus’s words in Matthew 5:14, calling us to be the “light of the world,” but it also points to the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21, a city that “needs no sun, for the glory of God gives it light.” Bright City is meant to be a taste of the diversity, peace, and presence of the Kingdom of God.

To that end, Bright City is a community that welcomes everyone, regardless of their background. Whether you are curious, skeptical, wounded, or a lifelong follower of Jesus, there is a place for you. No matter your story or where you are coming from, you are here because Jesus is pursuing you. We would love to come alongside of you, and help you take your next step toward him!
